In early 2022, 'Honouring the past, delivering the future' was published to mark the occasion of the 100-year anniversary of UvA Economics and Business. This is a special centennial book of the history, founding and development of our 100-year-old faculty across five key periods marked by the years 1922, 1947, 1972, 1997 and 2022.
A recurring theme in the book is the Mercator Sapiens, the wise, erudite merchant introduced by Caspar Barlaeus in 1632 during his inaugural address at the Athenaeum Illustre, now the University of Amsterdam.
Also in this book, 10 international economists and business experts will share their thoughts on how the wise merchant would respond to the challenges we face today. What can the Mercator Sapiens do? And how can the science of economics and business contribute to these initiatives?
And if these are the challenges awaiting the Mercator Sapiens, can we be confident that our current generation of students can meet these challenges? Where do they stand in this playing field? What is their sense of engagement? Which ideals do they value and strive for? What is their vision of the future? How do they see their own future? The book provides a portrait of the current generation of students at our 100-year-old faculty.
With its richly illustrated chapters and historical details, this book is a rewarding read.
