If you are not eligible for accommodation through UvA Staff Housing, or do not wish to use our service, you can look for a place on own. Here we provide a few tips and definitions to get your started.

Visiting researchers staying for a minimum 3 months may be able to get an apartment through the Stichting Gastenverblijven UvA. This foundation administers a number of apartments on the Oudezijds Kolk and Geldersekade. Monthly rents vary from €700 to €1500. Contact: email@example.com
During your hunt for housing in Amsterdam, you may hear the term ‘social housing’ (in Dutch: sociale huurwoning) which refers to rent-controlled apartments. It is highly unlikely that you will gain access to social housing because the average waiting period in Amsterdam is currently 15 years.
Officially, social housing is capped at €720 a month; accommodation above that price is considered ‘private sector’.
The private sector is usually much more expensive than social housing. In practice, there are very few apartments available below €1,000 a month and most are above €1,500 a month.
Some private sector housing is offered through individuals, and some through housing corporations. The housing corporations have strict income requirements. You will need to earn at least four times the monthly rent to be eligible for the apartment.
