Today, many important private law questions no longer stop at national and disciplinary borders. Lawyers – working in legal practice – national and EU institutions, international corporations, NGOs and academia are increasingly confronted with rules and doctrines of European and international origin. This Master’s track provides you with the knowledge and skills for working in an international legal environment.

  5. Interactive learning is essential in the intensive module European Private Law in Practice. This course is part of the experiential learning programme of the Amsterdam Law Practice.

The study programme

All students in European Private Law take part in the compulsory courses: Private Law in a European and International ContextEuropean Contract Law and of course the module European Private Law in Practice and the special MA thesis programme. 

For the 30 EC electives, students interested in reinforcing their understanding of more traditional subjects will likely turn towards Comparative LawEuropean Tort Law or EU Private International Law. Those keen on exploring theoretical and interdisciplinary fault lines will be drawn to Human Rights in Private Law or Making markets beyond the state. People who are interested in market regulation can choose courses like Consumer Rights in the Digital Single MarketFinance, Security and Insolvency, European Company Law or Foundations of EU Competition Law.

Is this programme for you?

Do you want insights and knowledge about private law issues in a rapidly changing world? This LLM programme provides you with a thorough understanding of the European and international aspects of private law, and of the economic, social and political forces driving its Europeanisation and globalisation.

Students holding a Dutch university Bachelor’s degree in Law and PPLE can be directly admitted to the programme. International students with a comparable academic degree are also admissible. Applications are assessed by the Admissions Board. If you hold a different Bachelor’s degree, please consult our list of admission requirements in the Teaching and Examinations Regulations.

After graduation

Thanks to its ‘in context’ approach, the LLM European Private Law forms flexible, critical, problem-driven and curious lawyers. They can easily adapt to different kinds of practices and functions in the private and public sector. Students who have finished a Bachelor’s programme at the UvA before joining our Master’s programme, qualify for the legal professions in the Netherlands (‘civiel effect’). Civiel effect

European Private Law graduates qualify for admission to the Dutch bar (“civiel effect”) if they have completed a Bachelor’s programme in Dutch law. Read more information (in Dutch).

Entry requirements:

  • Academic degree comparable to a Dutch Bachelor of Laws (LLB).
  • A basic knowledge of European Law.
  • English proficiency: TOEFL: 100 iBT | IELTS: overall score 7.0 | CEA/CEP (grade C)* 

* Not applicable to holders of a Bachelor’s degree from a Dutch university. Go to Application and admission for other exemption criteria.
