The focus of this master’s degree programme lies at the interface between pure and applied scientific research, with a strong emphasis upon interaction between insight, innovation and development on the one hand and practical applications on the other.
The first year of the Master’s program includes topics such as Health Data Science, Data Drive Decision Making and Healthcare Management and introduces you to at least two departments of the Academic Medical Centre through Internships. .
The second year of the Master's in Medical Informatics allows you to choose from a wide range of elective courses such as Health Economics, Human Centered Multimedia, Internet programming, Advanced Medical Image Processing, eHealth and Machine Learning and other Artificial Intelligence courses. This gives you the opportunity to tailor the program precisely to your own personal preferences and skills.
Students will have the opportunity to visit the yearly Medical Informatics Healthcare Conference. This gives our students an opportunity to get acquainted with the latest developments in the field and get into contact with the Dutch labor market.
Start your career smoothly by doing an internship of 6-12 EC in the first year, followed by an internship of around 42 EC in the second year.
This especially gives international students a unique opportunity to experience the Dutch Health ICT labor market. Students can choose from a range of internship positions offered by our contacts with Health ICT research institutes, businesses and other international universities such as those in the International Partnership of Health Informatics Education. The internship will be guided by an academic supervisor and must be finished with a scientific report.
You may choose to participate in an exchange semester to fulfill your master thesis work facilitated by another (international) university. The AMC took the lead in establishing an international network of 10 partner universities, each offering unique opportunities for such an exchange semester.

After successful completion of this program, you will receive a legally and internationally accredited Master’s degree in Medical Informatics and the title Master of Science (MSc).

Scientific Research Project (42 EC)
The first three courses are electives, which can be substituted by other relevant courses if approved by the Examinations Board of Medical Informatics.
The programme is taught entirely in English.
